"Cahuachi"

Ceremonial center of the largest adobe in the world

“Cahuachi” is located south of Peru-Ica in the Nasca Valley, km. 460 of the South Panamerican highway. Within the problematic urban development of the area of Nasca, Cahuachi represents, for many authors, one of the greatest moments of habitation expansion of the southern coast. This interpretation is based on the description that Strong gave over their occupation of some hillocks, but extending a limited reality to the entire architectural context of the site. The most recent investigations have clarified many doubts about the real function of the site, based on the results of systematic excavations in different sectors.

During the investigations conducted until 1999 by the Italian mission “Proyecto Nasca”, researchers arrived at conclusions (albeit partial) that confirmed that all of the analyzed sectors had a ceremonial character and that the registered human activities in the temples were always related to rites or the production of sacred objects. The analysis of the associated architecture, ceramics and offerings leave no doubt about the purpose of the buildings. The presence in the surrounding areas of sites whose residential function has been proven is a testament that the demographic population in the valley increased and that the majority of these people were strictly linked with the ceremonial center and its objectives.
